Glen Wood, the courtly and innovative patriarch of the famed Wood Brothers Nascar racing team, died on Friday in Stuart, Va., the town where he was born. He was 93 and the oldest living member of the Nascar Hall of Fame.
Wood Brothers Racing announced the death.
Wood founded the team in 1950 with his younger brother Leonard and was initially its primary driver. He won four times in an 11-year racing career, retiring from behind the wheel in 1964.
In 1998 he was named one of Nascar’s 50 greatest drivers — a list that includes 20 drivers who had once raced a Wood Brothers car. He was elected to the Nascar Hall of Fame, in Charlotte, N.C., in 2012. Leonard Wood was inducted the next year.
The Wood Brothers won 99 races in more than 1,500 starts in Nascar’s elite division, and they did it with an array of manufacturers and multiple star drivers.
“We started racing in 1950 with a car we bought for ,” Glen Wood told The Associated Press in 2000. “We put No. 50 on the side of the car.”
The number was later changed to 21, and it became one of the most esteemed in Nascar. David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Curtis Turner and A. J. Foyt were among the team’s drivers. Pearson, who died in November at 83, waged most of his battles with his rival Richard Petty while driving for the Wood Brothers.
Wood drove in the inaugural 1959 Daytona 500 and won that race five times as a team owner — in 1963 (Tiny Lund), 1968 (Yarborough), 1972 (Foyt), 1976 (Pearson) and 2011 (Trevor Bayne).
The Wood Brothers entered the Indianapolis 500 in 1965 as the pit crew for Jim Clark, the most glamorous Formula One driver of the day. Four Wood brothers — Glen, Leonard, Delano and Ray Lee — serviced Clark’s Lotus. Clark won the race.
Wood Brothers Racing was recently recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest active Nascar team, at 69 years.
“In addition to their on-track success, Wood Brothers Racing is recognized for revolutionizing the pit stops and dropping the time teams spent on pit road by as much as 50 percent,” Winston Kelley, the Nascar Hall of Fame executive director, said on Friday.
He added, “I’ve often said if you looked up the term ‘Southern Gentleman’ in the dictionary, you would see a picture of Glen Wood.”
Wood was born on July 18, 1925, in Stuart, a small town in western Virginia, not far from the North Carolina border. Formerly Taylorsville, it was renamed after the Confederate general J. E. B. Stuart. Wood first worked in a sawmill and acquired the nickname the Woodchopper.
Stuart is also home to the Wood Brothers Racing Museum, where Wood and his wife, Bernece, were known to greet fans in his later years. His oldest son, Eddie, is the current president of Wood Brothers Racing. Leonard Wood, who is 84, also survives. Complete information on survivors was not available.
Glen Wood became hooked on racing when he made a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., in 1947 to watch cars on the original beach road course.
For the next 70 years he never missed the annual Speedweeks in Daytona, his family said, driving there each year. (He had driven a 1940 two-door Ford on his first trip, in 1947.)
But failing health and fear of widespread flu kept him home for the first time last season, Eddie Wood said.
“He just didn’t want to risk getting sick,” he said.
Speedweeks this year begins on Feb. 9.B:
